Today marked a very special occasion in the history of Malvern College Chengdu; all the pupils participated in the first ever MCC Amazing Race.
This extraordinary activity was inspired by the well-received and popular variety show originating from Korea, “Running Man”. The pupils were asked to form a team of Magic Five and compete in the race. They were given different tasks and a mission to complete. They were challenged in many different ways including their intelligence, coordination, communication, collaboration, physical limit and creativity. Every single task was specially designed to incorporate each of the Malvern qualities.

Let’s have a quick glimpse at what happened during the day:
Pupils were asked to decipher a code first as a warm up challenge and, after they solved the code, they received a clue card relating to the next challenge. Through “collaboration” the pupils worked together to solve the challenge and got the answer as soon as they could!
Next, an ambitious challenge where the students had to push their physical boundaries. Each group were required to use their bodies to form the shape of the Malvern ‘M’. Yet, what they didn’t then realize, this was only a warm-up for the trials that would follow.
Supervised by the guiding hand of a teacher, the teams then had to utilize teamwork and collaboration to a higher extreme when they had to stand together without touching the ground on a ‘Shrinking Island’ (a newspaper after four folds). Fostering a true sense of togetherness with much laughter and a few stumbles, students exceled at this juncture and impressed us with their aptitude for team work; something we value so much at MCC.
Meeting the demands of thepenultimate mission, students’ voices bellowed, ‘I love Malvern’. Reaching apitch of 88 decibels and above, students made us proud before moving on totheir final undertaking in the quest for the coveted title of ‘Amazing RaceHeroes’.
To conclude, the bands of students, were posed with a novel challenge. In their alliances they used marshmallows and toothpicks to create the tallest, largest or most creative structure they could and had to appropriately describe their creations. How wonderful and creative they were!
Eventually, the winners were crowned. Yet, every boy and girl deserve praise for their amazing contributions. No doubt the comradery, laughter, collaboration, teamspirit and effort demonstrated throughout this epic event will live on in our memories for a very long time!
The Amazing Race exhibits only a small part of our daily lives here at MCC; a brief display of how learning and lifelong skills are implemented. The learning environment we provide is conducive to optimal achievement and success.
Malvern College Chengdu is a school that looks beyond teaching only academics and instead offers a holistic education. We believe that pupils can learn not just in the classroom, but also from each and every thing that they do. We create opportunities for growth and encourage them to make the most ofthe many exciting openings that come their way whilst they are here, whether this means trying a new activity, learning something new in class or strengthening relationships with classmates, teachers or the school. We are sure that they will discover many new and interesting things about themselves and the world around them, ultimately becoming global citizens with firm roots in China.
