Winter has arrived at Malvern College Chengdu as the school welcomes its most special moment of the year — The Winter Celebration. It is a time of celebration throughout the school and a great opportunity for our students to perform. After three years of learning and mastery, children in primary school and The Early Years have achieved substantial results in arts, sport, and performance skills. The rock, jazz, and classical music bands of our secondary school students, together with outstanding singers and dancers, have created a memorable concert for us all!
Let’s look at the highlights from last Friday!
Elves, reindeer, moose, and snowflakes counted down from 10 to bid farewell to yesterday and to welcome the arrival of winter. The Early Years’ children wore cute costumes and waved their little hands as they sprang across the stage.
Primary school students also gave wonderful performances as students showcased the musical instrument, chorus, dance, and drama skills they had learned in class.
Clarinet, celesta, cello, violin, ukulele, and electronic keyboard are all mandatory courses for music class and the teachers gave a signal on stage and the children then played beautiful tunes on their instruments.
Students from Grade 1 to 4 sang together, and their youthful songs brought warmth to the harsh winter cold. Students from Grade 1 to 4 sang together, and their youthful songs brought warmth to the harsh winter cold. The theatrical performances “Elves on Strike”, “Sugar Plum Fairy”, and “Waltz of Snow” were all associated with snowflakes and elves. The children’s graceful and flowing movements, clear voices, reminiscent of oriole bird calls, and convincing performances brought the audience to a magical world of childhood wonder.
In addition to the performances, the primary school children also added a special “Winter Love” gift exchange event. Children gathered gifts they had prepared in advance. The colourful presents dazzled the children and they excitedly discussed the mysterious gifts they would soon receive.
The welcome music “Canon in D” took the audience back to Germany in the year 1680. Just as the audience became absorbed by the graceful music of the piano and violin and experienced the prosperity and philosophical achievements of the Baroque period, the music brought them back to reality with the theme song from “Game of Thrones” played by the MCC Orchestra. The passionate and dramatic performance enthralled the audience, and it was at that moment that the Secondary school’s Winter Concert was officially unveiled.
Malvern College Chengdu is an innovative bilingual school that integrates Chinese and Western culture. The blending of Chinese and world cultures culminated in wonderful performances at this concert. The exceptional performances showed us the confidence of the MCC students in their culture as well as their openness, understanding of world cultures. The children sang songs on stage with microphones in their hands while accompanied by their classmates or the music teachers on the piano. This peaceful and beautiful scene left a lasting impression on the audience.
The one-day Winter Celebration drew to a close and left the audience wanting to see more of the performance talents and skills of the children. Let’s look forward to even better performances from the children in next year’s Winter Celebration!
